Southwark Typeface: From Sketch to Structure
Southwark Typeface is a custom-designed typeface developed as part of my Design Fundamentals module at London College of Communication. The project explores Southwark as a source of visual inspiration, focusing on its architecture, urban structures, and public spaces. The design process began with extensive on-site observation and hand sketching, translating architectural forms and spatial relationships into typographic concepts. These early explorations informed the development of multiple stylistic directions, from which a final design system was selected. The final typeface is based on a structural framework inspired by the verticality and proportions of the tower, influencing both the scale and construction of the letterforms. The project concludes with a series of tests, mockups, and posters designed to evaluate readability, consistency, and visual impact in real-world applications.
